The National GEM Consortium's primary focus is to administer and award full fellowships with paid internships to highly qualified under-represented students who wish to pursue graduate studies in engineering or science. GEM's program activities, however, go beyond financial support by engendering student success in academic and professional environments. GEM has a solid success record in implementing effective programs to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation of minority students.
Ph.D. Program Applicants must be a senior, masters student, or graduate student of an engineering or applied science program (see website for eligible disciplines), must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and must contractually agree to intern with a GEM Employer member at least once early on or before the start of the Ph.D. program. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens and a member of one of the following under-represented groups: American Indian/Native, African American/Black, or Hispanic American/Latino.
