Support for research and research training in basic biomedical sciences.
Most grants are dedicated to advanced research or to institutional support. However, individual awards under the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program fund predoctoral fellowships for members of minority groups underrepresented in the biomedical or behavioral sciences in the U.S.: African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders. A similar program funds predoctoral work for students with disabilities. Both fellowships are highly selective, and provide up to five years of support for research training leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent research degree, a combined M.D.-Ph.D. degree, or another combined professional doctorate-research Ph.D. in biomedical or behavioral sciences. Support includes an annual stipend, tuition and fee allowance, and other benefits. Application deadlines occur in May and November.
